2019 Toyota Corolla vs 2019 Honda Civic vs 2018 Hyundai Elantra

Take a quick look at the most popular vehicles currently sold in Canada, and you’ll find the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Elantra. These three compact sedans are at the top of their segment because they offer what Canadians want, namely fuel economy, reliability, connectivity, safety and versatility.

They also offer plenty of value with low interest rates and flexible financing and leasing terms. Ultimately, choosing which model is the better option for you depends on your specific needs. That said, if your main concerns are value and safety, the 2019 Toyota Corolla certainly has the arguments to convince you.

Safety is Standard with the 2019 Toyota Corolla

A few years ago, Toyota made safety their top priority by developing the Toyota Safety Sense system and then implementing it as standard equipment in every new Toyota vehicle including the Corolla.

The 2019 Toyota Corolla therefore gets advanced active safety technologies such as radar-based adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and prevention with steering assist, automatic braking with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beam assist.

Many of these features aren’t available in the 2018 Elantra, and certainly not as standard equipment. On the other hand, the 2019 Civic does offer active safety features in every trim including the base model.

New for 2019, the Civic does in fact come standard with a suite of driver assistance technologies, but there is a catch. The 2019 Civic is about $1,000 more than the 2018 model, and $1,000 more than the base Corolla.

Starting at $17,790 vs $16,790 for the Corolla, the 2019 model essentially compensated for the added safety features by increasing its starting price. So, in other words, you do get safety features in every model, but you are paying for them. The 2019 Corolla remains at the same price level as last year’s model.

As far as engines go, the 2019 Corolla gets a 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine that delivers 132 horsepower. That’s slightly less than the Civic and Elantra’s four-cylinder engines, but the Corolla does make up for it with an average fuel economy rating that can go as low as 7.8 liters per 100 kilometers in the city and 5.9 liters per 100 kilometers on the highway.

When comparing three vehicles that compete so closely, you can’t expect to find massive differences between them. The reality is that the 2019 Corolla provides better value and more affordable safety, but when it comes to how the vehicle behaves on the road, how fast it is, how fuel-efficient it is and how versatile it is, all three are very similar.

The Corolla does have a slight upper hand in the reliability and resale value departments as well.
