The 2024 Toyota Tacoma Powertrain: Redefining Mid-Size Truck Segment with Enhanced Performance and Efficiency

The 2024 Toyota Tacoma Powertrain: Redefining Mid-Size Truck Segment with Enhanced Performance and Efficiency

After reigning the mid-size pickup truck market for nearly two decades, Toyota is launching a completely revamped Tacoma for 2024. The new generation truck is ready for enhanced adventures, displaying Toyota’s hallmark quality, durability, and reliability, whilst introducing innovative upgrades and an all-new Trailhunter grade, inspired by the 2022 SEMA show’s Trailhunter concept.

At the heart of the 2024 Tacoma are two potent, efficient turbocharged four-cylinder powertrains, debuting the i-FORCE MAX hybrid - a mid-size, body-on-frame pickup segment innovation. This hybrid version integrates a 2.4L engine with a 48-hp electric motor, utilizing a 1.87-kWh NiMH battery pack. The system creates an impressive 326 horsepower and a whopping 465 lb.-ft. of torque, a marked improvement over the current generation. Fuel economy estimates are anticipated ahead of their sale dates.

For non-hybrid models, Tacoma offers a 2.4L turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. of torque in Canadian markets. Paired with a new eight-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission, it also offers a six-speed intelligent manual transmission, for those seeking a more immersive driving experience.

The Tacoma is engineered for North America on the TNGA-F global truck platform, also underpinning the Tundra and Sequoia. The high-strength, boxed, steel-ladder frame hosts an array of off-road features and a redesigned multi-link coil rear suspension for improved ride and handling.

Further enhancing its capability, the Tacoma introduces Toyota's Trailhunter grade, a purpose-built overlanding rig available straight from the dealer. Additionally, in Canada, all models come with a four-wheel-drive system and an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case for heightened performance.

In terms of capacity, the Tacoma can tow up to 6,500 lbs and handle a payload up to 1,709 lbs. It is also equipped with towing aid features, such as a trailer brake controller, backup guide, and digital display mirror, aimed to simplify and enhance the towing experience.

Dave Christ, Toyota group vice president and general manager, expressed confidence that the 2024 Tacoma, set to hit the market later this year, with the i-FORCE MAX models launching in early 2024, will retain its status as the top choice among midsize pickup buyers.
